Art Spiegelmen, Maus
Second choice for the Book Club comes from Tom. A controversial start considering graphic novels are somewhat frowned upon in the intellectual circles frequented by Book Club members. Maus did not fail to charm and horrify, which presumably is what you want from the topic. Spiegelman approaches the subject painfully, playing his credentials as someone afflicted personally by the events and therefore sanctioned to write (and draw) about them. He also seems eager to deflect criticism by being his own detractor. The novel is one of such delicacy and simple beauty that you wonder why he felt the need to take such care. Highly recommended.
